Functional Medicine is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting from the traditional “disease-centered” focus of modern medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms.
Chronic disease arises from a complex interaction of one’s unique genetic, dietary, iatrogenic, microbial, environmental, social, emotional and lifestyle factors that are often overlooked or not addressed adequately by standard conventional healthcare practitioners. Functional medicine is uniquely suited to uncovering and correcting these “root causes” of chronic disease with the goal of preventing and reversing complex medical conditions including cancer, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, dementia, obesity, autoimmune disorders, depression/anxiety, gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, hormonal imbalances (adrenal/thyroid/sex), heavy metal toxicity, and chronic infections including Lyme, mold and candida. The modalities of treatment include personalized diet recommendations, genetic testing, stress reduction practices, sleep hygiene practices, individualized physical activity recommendations and medical/botanical/nutrient therapies as necessary following focused advanced laboratory testing.
David Lobur MD is a board-certified internist who came to realize through the care of his patients and budding health concerns of his own family that the “status quo” approach was simply not enough to fully treat complex medical issues. His path and passion to provide the best care possible for his patients and family led him to the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) where now after engaging in several years of dedicated training he carries the title of IFM Certified Practitioner (IFMCP). He avidly practices functional medicine at the Squirrel Hill Family Wellness Center and looks forward to helping all individuals that he cares for to realize their optimal state of health and wellness!
