At Squirrel Hill Family Wellness Center, we treat a variety of childhood and adult problems combining time-honored natural and alternative healing methods with conventional medical practices.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a new way of thinking about medical care. Rather than looking just at the immediate medical problem or symptom, this approach brings the patient and practitioner together, working collaboratively to find and address the underlying issues and causes of the disease.

This means that Functional Medicine changes the way we practice medicine. It leads us to a better understanding of the patient as a whole and allows for therapy that heals the whole person rather than only addressing each acute problem. This means our care is more forward-thinking, proactive, and focused on prevention as well as healing, rather than the old way of treating issues as they become apparent.

We get to the root cause of your disease.

Homeopathy

A 200 year old natural system of medicine based on scientific concepts developed by Samuel Hahnemann, MD. Natural substances that are known to produce disease symptoms when given in a toxic amount are used to heal those same symptoms when prescribed in a safe, diluted, and energized form. This form of medicine is used as a primary system of healing in many countries throughout the world. Dr. Berez studied this form of medicine in a homeopathic medical school  in Mexico City between 1976 and 1981. She combined in hospital training with one year of government service prior to her Family Practice residency where she learned to apply homeopathy to acute, chronic, and life threatening illnesses. She has dedicated the last 30 years to deepening these skills.

Naturopathy

A system of medicine based on the philosophy that nature heals when given the chance. Dr. Berez learned the ancient tools of naturopathy from 1972-1976 at the National School of Naturopathic Medicine in Seattle, Washington. She was fortunate to have apprenticed in the office of Dr. John Bastyr, a preeminent Naturopath. The school taught many natural methods of healing, such as hydrotherapy, nutrition, mechanical, botanical, colonic therapy, homeopathic medicine, and physiotherapy. Her medical thinking is rooted in these guiding principles. She has the firm belief that the body can heal itself when given the right messages and stimulating the vital force .

Nutrition

Dr. Berez and Dr. Magan are of a limited group of practitioners who practice functional medicine. They have  learned to apply nutrition to restore the biochemical balance and aid a return to health. Small amounts of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids can be used to replace medications used for common diseases of aging, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, autoimmune disorders, skin problems, and many more. Together they were part of the first group of practitioners to achieve certification by the Institute for Functional Medicine in 2013.

Mind Body Techniques

It is important to address all underlying cause of a patients distress. Dr. Berez  teaches her patients tools to help with daily stressors of life including relaxation, breathing, and guided imagery. These simple tools can rebalance the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and restore peace in ones life.
